ABOUT US
Peter
Projects run my life. I wish it was the other way around. Details of design and construction enter my dreams! I've woken up several times with the solution to a confounding problem.
I've been working in the trades since I was a teen. My first projects were with my father, who was a Red Seal Carpenter. Being restless, creative, and having a drive to explore, I worked many jobs before starting my own business including house framing, timber-framing, roofing, painting, flooring, and doing renovations. I'm grateful to the rich community of workers that my family was connected to, and am proud to have worked with accomplished craftspeople who shared with me the knowledge of their vocations. That I'm able to express these skills in a way that contributes to my community is very fulfilling.
History
Walnut Carpentry was conceived in 2012. Gestation involved a Volvo station wagon carrying little more than a tool belt and a skill saw. During the first 4 years I continually invested in the business until by 2016 I had a truck, a trailer, and a full slate of excellent tools and construction equipment. This also marks the year that I hired Tom Kroeker, my first permanent employee, who stayed on until I left Winnipeg in 2021. As we evolved, our community gave us greater challenges. I'm much indebted to the folks who put their faith in us to tackle sometimes daunting projects, and for the support, encouragement and ultimately gratefulness expressed for a job well done. Turns out it takes a village to raise a small business.
Professional development
Build Guild MB

Education
Although I've never felt the need to pursue official accreditation in my field, I have trained under two red seal carpenters. I'm well read and educated in trade best practices, building science, and modern techniques. They say it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in something, and I've clocked over 25,000. At 42 I'm likely near the peak of where wisdom meets fitness. Get it while you can ;)
Employees
My right hand man Tom Kroeker, worked with me for 6 good years back in Winnipeg MB. You'll spot him in some of the project pics.
So far I've been collaborating with some amazing Gabriola carpenters and hiring project based workers. Check back to see who has joined the Walnut Carpentry team! If you, or someone you know would be a good fit, please get in touch :)
